The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says it is proposing to levy civil penalties of USD509,180 and USD169,500 against Martinaire Aviation (MRA, Dallas Addison) and Sun Air Express (Fort Lauderdale International) respectively for violating US Federal Aviation Regulations.

Concerning Martinaire Aviation, the FAA alleges the Texan carrier violated Notification to Pilot-In-Command, or NOPIC, requirements for the transportation of hazardous materials on board its aircraft for forty-three flights between October 1, 2013 and December 3, 2013. The cargo included toxic, corrosive and flammable materials, as well as ammunition.

“NOPICs document critical information about hazardous materials,” said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. “Their purpose is to provide pilots and emergency responders with complete information about hazardous materials on aircraft for emergency response purposes.”

The FAA, which discovered the alleged violations during a comprehensive hazardous materials inspection at the company’s headquarters, is in touch with the airline.

Concerning Sun Air Express, the FAA alleges the charter operator failed to conduct required annual inspections of avionics systems on three Piper (twin piston) PA-31-350s in 2014. The agency alleges the company flew the aircraft on a total of 313 flights when the inspections were overdue.

Sun Air Express has asked to meet with the FAA to discuss the case.
