Ethiopian Airlines (ET, Addis Ababa International) is planning to develop Bangkok Suvarnabhumi into its Southeast Asian hub the airline's regional manager for Thailand and Southeast Asia, Meaza Taye, has told The Nation newspaper.

The Star Alliance carrier currently uses the airport as a stopover on flights to Manila Ninoy Aquino International and Kuala Lumpur International and, according to Taye, will incorporate the Thai capital into its upcoming Hanoi Noi Bai International route which launches in November this year. It also plans to add connecting routes through Bangkok to Singapore Changi and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta by March next year, he added.

In a bid to stimulate increased tourism to the country, the Thai government has adopted a liberal policy in the allocation of Fifth Freedom traffic rights to foreign carriers.
