The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has fined First Nation Airways (Lagos) NGN33.5 million (USD106,000) after it was found that the medical certificate for one of its pilots had expired, reports The Vanguard. Of the penalty, NGN1.5 million (USD4,700) is to be paid by the pilot, and the remainder by the airline.

Without a valid medical certificate, the pilot's license was rendered invalid. The medical certificate expired on November 1, 2016, and the pilot operated a total of sixteen flights from that date until the NCAA's inspection.

The NCAA has advised other airline operators to "to acquaint themselves properly with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (NCARs)" or face penalties for violations.

First Nation Airways resumed operations in September 2016 following a suspension while its aircraft were undergoing maintenance. The scheduled carrier operates a pair of A319-100s leased from AerCap on regular shuttle flights between Lagos, Abuja, and Kaduna
