Greater Binghamton Airport, a public aerodrome located thirteen kilometres north of Binghamton, in Broome County, New York, will close to all commercial traffic for the entire month of May to allow for runway resurfacing works.

Among the airlines affected is the airfield's sole remaining scheduled operator - SkyWest Airlines (OO, Salt Lake City) - which offers a 13x weekly return service to Detroit Metropolitan for and on behalf of Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) under its Delta Connection banner.

"It's just addressing the deterioration you see in asphalt, just like highways, runways and taxiways need to be redone every once in a while," Greater Binghamton Airport Aviation Commissioner David Hickling told KTWC news. "We need to make sure that we have a runway where planes can safely land and safely take off and the runway is a bit old. It needs the work done."

The repairs to the 2,220 metre-long runway 16/34 are expected to cost around USD11 million. The smaller 1,500 metre-long runway 10/28 will remain open for the duration of the works albeit only to General Aviation.
