Malawi's Kwacha Airlines secures ASL, eyes 3Q18 launch

The Malawian Ministry of Transport and Public Works has announced it has awarded Kwacha Airlines (Lilongwe) an Air Services Licence (ASL) to operate both domestic and international passenger and cargo flights.

According to The Malawi Post, the start-up is backed by three locals namely James Makunje Jnr, Chris Kapanga Jnr and Noel Chalamanda.

Rolls-Royce has warned of further operational disruptions to airlines which use its Trent 1000 Package C engines. In a statement issued on Friday, April 13, the UK-based manufacturer said it had recommended increased inspection frequencies given improved understanding of the issues affecting the durability of the Trent 1000 Package C compressor, in particular the IPC Rotor 1 and Rotor 2 blades where cracks have been found on select units.

Kuwait Airways resumes Beirut ops post Syria attacks

Kuwait Airways (KU, Kuwait) has resumed flights to Beirut, Lebanon, as of Sunday, April 15, following this past weekend's military action in Syria.

In a statement to the KUNA news agency, Kuwait Airways said the reasons for its suspension of service to the Lebanese capital have since abated. It had stopped flights on Thursday, April 12, amid a Eurocontrol warning of potential military traffic/ordnance in the vicinity of Syria through late Friday.

Denmark's DAT wins PSO contract in southern Italy

DAT - Danish Air Transport (DX, Kolding) has been awarded a EUR38.6 million euro (USD47.6 million) Public Service Obligation (PSO) contract in southern Italy for flights connecting the islands of Pantelleria and Lampedusa with airports in Sicily.

SAS orders one A330-300

SAS Scandinavian Airlines (SK, Copenhagen Kastrup) has confirmed it has placed an order with Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) for one A330-300.

The Scandinavian carrier said in a statement it would take delivery of the new-build aircraft in Spring 2019. It will replace one A340-300 which is used primarily as a reserve aircraft.

As with the rest of SAS's fleet of eight A330-300s, the aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 772Bs.

Auric Air (UI, Mwanza) has announced it has resumed scheduled passenger flights to Songea, in southern Tanzania, following Air Tanzania's recent pullout.

Auric Air said in a statement that it is currently offering a 5x weekly return service to Dar-es-Salaam using its fleet of Cessna (single turboprop) 208B Grand Caravans.
