GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes (G3, São Paulo Congonhas) has been ordered by a Brazilian labour court to reinstate 850 former Webjet (Rio de Janeiro International) employees, laid off following the airline's acquisition in November last year. In her ruling, Rio de Janeiro federal judge Maria Aparecida Coutinho Magalhães said her decision upholds a prior ruling which set collective damages at BRL1million (USD428'000) with a daily fine of between BRL100 and BRL1000 to be levied per worker in the event of Gol's non-compliance. Gol completed the purchase of Webjet in October 2011, for BRL70million, and assumed its debt of approximately BRL200million. On November 23, 2012, Gol announced the phasing out of Webjet and the discontinuation of its brand. At this point, a legal dispute with the Brazilian Labour ministry arose when it was announced that 850 Webjet employees would also be laid off. In light of this, Justice Magalhães stressed that the Brazilian Constitution protects the value of labour and therefore Gol could not embark on any mass layoffs without prior collective bargaining with the labour unions.
