PEOPLExpress (Newport News) has temporarily suspended operations effective immediately. In a statement, the budget carrier blamed operational challenges for the suspension.

"Recent aircraft and crew availability and maintenance issues, including an aircraft recently damaged by a vendor's truck, an engine change and a lack of a planned spare aircraft, have made it challenging to operate a full schedule, preventing us from delivering the passenger experience we are striving for," it said.

Launched in June this year, PEOPLExpress is a Vision Airlines (United States of America)-affiliated carrier and until now, had operated a B737-400 and a B737-300 on flights from Newport News to Boston, New York Newark, Pittsburgh International, St. Petersburg/Clearwater, West Palm Beach International, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson, and New Orleans International.

Flights are expected to resume on October 16 with flights from Orlando International to Newport News and Charleston, WV being added as well.
