VietJetAir (VJ, Hanoi Noi Bai International) is planning to add two converted B737 freighters, most likely B737-800(SF)s, Cargo Facts has reported.

The Vietnamese airline has been touting the addition of freighters for some time but has so far not announced any specific plans. It did not disclose a timeline for the order or induction of the two aircraft.

The ch-aviation fleets module shows that VietJetAir has no in-house stock of B737-800s available for conversion. The airline operates eighteen A320-200s, thirty-eight A321-200s, twelve A321-200Ns, seven A321-200NX, and two A330-300s (its Thai sister carrier, Thai VietJetAir, operates a further ten A320s and six A321s). The airline has firm orders with Airbus and Boeing for 319 narrowbody aircraft: ninety-nine A321-200NX, twenty A321-200NY(XLR)s, sixty-six B737-8s, twenty-eight B737-8-200s, and 106 B737-10s.

In a recent interview with ch-aviation, Group Chief Financial Officer Yen Phuong said that in the long-term, the airline would target cargo having a 10-20% share of total revenue, although passenger operations will remain the airline's priority. The Vietnamese carrier has also bandied around the possibility of an IPO of its existing cargo division, which utilises passenger jet bellyhold capacity.

The airline did not respond to a request for more information.
