Meridiana fly (Olbia) has ended McDonnell Douglas operations following the completion of the model's last commercial service for the airline on Tuesday, October 31.

In a statement, Meridiana said its last McDonnell Douglas flight operated as IG1116 - Rome Fiumicino-Olbia. The Italian carrier's remaining fleet of the type entailed three MD-82s and one MD-83 all of which are to be replaced by Air Italy (2005) (Milan Malpensa) operated B737 equipment from November 1 onwards.

The ch-aviation aircraft database shows Meridiana has operated a total of nine MD-82s and five MD-83s over the years.

As part of his airline's acquisition of a 49% stake in the Sardinia-based carrier's AQA Holding firm, Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad International) chief executive Akbar al Baker has pledged to renew Meridiana's fleet with more modern aircraft including the B737 MAX, B787, and A330.
