Air Niugini (PX, Port Moresby) will not resume the services to Buka, the interim capital of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville located in the northern part of the Solomon Islands archipelago, as the visual landing aids remain damaged due to vandalism, Post-Courier has reported.

The carrier has terminated services to the airport following a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued on April 10, which informed the carriers that the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) lights at the airport have been damaged.

Prior to the suspension, Air Niugini had operated flights out of Buka to each of Port Moresby and Rabaul using Fokker 100 equipment.

The airport continues to be served by PNG Air (CG, Port Moresby) which, according to the ch-aviation capacity module, operates out of Buka to each of Rabaul, Kieta, and Lihir Island.
