St. George Regional Airport in Utah will close for heavy structural repairs of the runway between April 25 and August 21, 2019, St. George News has reported.
The airport's 2,835 metre-long runway 01/19 has been affected by water penetrating the ground and damaging its foundations. The strip has been undergoing continuous patching as a short-term solution, but the city council decided during a meeting on Thursday, August 30 that in the mid-term, a complete reconstruction was necessary.
The works will cost some USD27 million, with USD25 million provided as a grant by the Federal Aviation Administration.
During the closure, the city will also upgrade the airport's terminal and car parks.
According to the ch-aviation capacity module, the airport in south-western Utah currently sees scheduled flights by all three major US legacy carriers. Delta Air Lines flies 27x weekly to Salt Lake City, United Airlines - 14x weekly to Denver International and 7x weekly to Los Angeles International, and American Airlines - 14x weekly to Phoenix Sky Harbor.
