VietJetAir (VJ, Hanoi Noi Bai International) eyes its maiden intercontinental service in 2019 with the prospect of launching flights to Darwin in Australia, NT News has reported.

"We have already taken the opportunity to meet with the vice-president and staff of Vietjet, one of Vietnam’s leading airlines, to encourage them to consider establishing new direct links between Ho Chi Minh City and Darwin," Northern Territory Chamber president Greg Ireland said.

According to the ch-aviation capacity module, VietJetAir currently flies predominantly domestically with just 23.3% of all departures scheduled on international services. The Vietnamese LCC operates internationally from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi Noi Bai International, Da Nang, and Nha Trang Cam Ranh mostly to East and South-East Asia, with the most popular destinations being Seoul Incheon and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi.

For its part, Darwin also sees mostly domestic traffic with the international network limited to flights to Singapore Changi, Dili, Denpasar, and Shenzhen.
