Vietnam Airlines (VN, Hanoi Noi Bai International) launched flights to Quang Ninh, a new airport in northern Viet Nam, on December 30, 2018, the Vietnam Investment Review has reported.

The inauguration of the daily route from Ho Chi Minh City was delayed by a few days from the original plan, which assumed the launch would take place on December 25, 2018.

The first flight was operated with a B787-9 VN-A863 (msn 35153), Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows. Normal operations will be on board A321-200 equipment.

On January 20, 2019, VietJetAir (VJ, Hanoi Noi Bai International) will launch services to Quang Ninh, also connecting the city with Ho Chi Minh 4x weekly.

The construction of an airport in Quang Ninh, which will serve the world-famous landmark Ha Long Bay, was approved in 2009. The construction project cost around USD330 million. By 2020, the airport is expected to serve up to 2.5 million passengers per annum.
