Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna) is planning to consolidate its long-haul fleet around a single type in the future, CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech told Air Transport World.

Short of disclosing any dates or specific fleet plans, von Hoensbroech said that the unification of the widebody fleet was a "high priority task".

"It is not ideal to have two types of aircraft in a small long-haul fleet of twelve aircraft," he said.

According to the ch-aviation fleets module, the Austrian unit of Lufthansa Group currently operates six B767-300(ER)s and six B777-200(ER)s. The former subfleet is, on average, 25 years old, while the B777s are 18 years old.

Besides Brussels Airlines (SN, Brussels National), Austrian is the only mainline unit of Lufthansa Group which has not yet renewed its long-haul fleet recently. The group leadership made the decision conditional upon an improvement in the carrier's margins.
