Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth) have revealed plans to design and build a sixth terminal at the airline's hub with a long-term projection of up to 24 gates.

The plans, announced on May 20, call for an investment of up to USD3 billion in the new Terminal F, projected to open in 2025, plus an additional USD0.5 billion in enhancements to Terminal C.

The identified site, to the south of Terminal D, "provides significant flexibility for phasing in the number of gates for Terminal F [...] as demand for additional facilities is warranted," DFW and American said in a joint statement.

Design work for Terminal F will begin immediately, and DFW and American said they would explore "several different options" for the layout of the terminal.

The details will be finalised as part of a new lease agreement for the airport that is currently being negotiated. The investment will be financed by bonds and repaid through airline rates and charges.

Earlier improvements to terminals A, B and E, completed in 2018, included redesigned check-in areas, expanded security checkpoints and concessions spaces, and improved lighting and flooring. Similar work is envisaged for Terminal C, which initially opened as one of the airport's original structures in January 1974.

American is by far Dallas/Forth Worth's most important airline, accounting for 84.09% of the hub's 879,383 weekly seats and 84.32% of its 6,958 weekly flights, according to the ch-aviation capacity module.
