Star Alliance has confirmed that OceanAir Linhas Aéreas S.A., which used to operate as Avianca Brasil (São Paulo Congonhas), will leave its fold with effect from September 1, 2019.

The airline grouping said in a statement on August 19 that the move follows the Brazilian carrier's protracted period of inactivity given the withdrawal of its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) in May this year.

"Initially joining Star Alliance in 2015, Avianca Brasil made important contributions to our customer proposition in the Brazilian market, and we regret this unfortunate development," Jeffrey Goh, CEO Star Alliance, said in a statement.

"I wish to stress that the exit of Avianca Brasil in no way affects the membership of Avianca (Bogotá), our valued member based in Bogotá, Colombia, which continues to be a significant contributor to the Alliance in South America."
