Aegean Airlines (A3, Athens) will open a new base on Corfu/Kerkyra this summer, becoming the Greek carrier's eighth base in Greece and Cyprus alongside Athens, Irakleion, Kalamata, Kos Hippocrates, Larnaca, Rhodes International, and Thessaloniki.
According to a press release, as part of this new base opening, Aegean will commence a new 2x weekly route to Paris CDG from Corfu, as well as 12 charter destinations. The fresh capacity will see Aegean offer an additional 95,000 seats versus the previous year from the island.
The establishment of its eighth home station is part of a significant capacity increase earmarked by Aegean for 2020, with an additional 1.5 million seats planned, up to 19.2 million, when compared to last year. The new Corfu-Paris CDG route is one of 11 new international services expected in 2020, as well as four new destinations - Birmingham, GB, Bilbao, Nuremberg and Paphos - being added or resumed on its Athens network. Aegean will also add frequencies on 47 of its existing routes, including some from the Greek capital city.
From Thessaloniki, the carrier is increasing its international capacity by 25%, with six new routes to Barcelona El Prat, Berlin Tegel, Brussels National, Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, and Zurich commencing from March 29 onwards.
Part-fuelling this capacity expansion are the six new A320-200neo and A321-200neo that Aegean will accept into its fleet in the first half of 2020, increasing its fleet to 65 aircraft.
"We believe that through the implementation of our business plan, as well as strategic partnerships we implement with cities and regional authorities of our country, we gradually develop the appropriate product mix for the diffusion of tourism product, and the overall enhancement of its qualitative characteristics,” added Dimitris Gerogiannis, Chief Executive Officer of Aegean.
According to the ch-aviation schedules module, Aegean's largest base is currently Athens, commanding 44% of weekly capacity, well ahead of Thessaloniki, which offers 6%.
