AirAsia Japan (Nagoya Chubu) has announced it will resume two domestic routes and launch a new one on August 1, 2020, becoming the last AirAsia Group unit to restart operations following a COVID-19-induced pause.

The airline plans to restart services between Nagoya Chubu and Sapporo Chitose (3x daily) and between Nagoya and Sendai (daily), which have both been suspended since early April 2020. The carrier said it would also launch an entirely new daily route from Nagoya to Fukuoka.

AirAsia Japan is the smallest of all AirAsia Group's carriers with just three A320-200s in its fleet. Prior to the pandemic, the airline also plied a single international route, from Nagoya to Taipei Taoyuan, which will remain suspended for the time being.

During the first three months of 2020, AirAsia Japan - which is 49%-owned by AirAsia Group - lost JPY1.24 billion yen (USD11.5 million).
