Avelo Airlines (XP, Burbank) is installing Vortex Control Technologies finlets on its B737-800s and B737-700s, the company announced in a statement, adding that all of its airframes will be retrofitted by the end of the year.

By doing so, Avelo will be the first airline anywhere to install the finlets on a B737-800 and the second to employ them on any aircraft. The new tech should reduce the low-cost carrier’s total fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 1.4%, the company said.

The VCT finlets, recently certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration to be installed on the B737NG family, are small fins placed on the aft portion of an aircraft’s fuselage. They modify airflow and reduce drag, helping decrease fuel consumption and carbon emissions while enhancing range and performance, according to Seattle-based Vortex Control Technologies.

The ch-aviation fleets module shows that the Avelo Airlines’ fleet comprises sixteen aircraft, including seven B737-700s, and nine B737-800s.
