Pratt & Whitney engine issues are stifling the growth of Juneyao Air (HO, Shanghai Hongqiao), which recorded a 2.7% year-over-year decline in capacity, measured by available seat kilometres (ASK), in August 2025 despite the overall growth of the Chinese market, according to a regulatory filing.
ch-aviation fleets data show Juneyao Air operates a mainline fleet of 103 aircraft, comprising thirty A320-200s, twenty-two A320-200Ns, twenty-seven A321-200s, fourteen A321-200NX, and ten B787-9s. Currently, twenty of these aircraft are inactive, including nine A320-200Ns, two A321-200s, and nine A321-200NX.
With thirty-six PW1100G-powered A320neo family aircraft, Juneyao Air is the third-largest operator of the problematic engine type in China, following Sichuan Airlines with 64 aircraft and Air China with 53.
Chairman Wang Junjin confirmed the impact of the groundings during an August 27 earnings briefing, where he stated that ongoing engine maintenance was negatively impacting aircraft utilisation.
Juneyao Air also operates a low-cost subsidiary, 9 Air (AQ, Guangzhou), which flies five B737-8s and twenty-two B737-800s.
