Fastjet (Dar es Salaam) is set to venture into the South African market from May 31 after a deal was struck with Blockbuster, a South African investment firm associated with a number of high profile South Africans including Edward Zuma and Yusuf Kajee. Under the deal, in which fastjet will hold a minority 25% stake with Blockbuster holding the rest, flights will operate between Cape Town International and Johannesburg O.R. Tambo using Federal Airlines (South Africa) (7V, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo)'s AOC, with whom Blockbuster have a commercial arrangement. As the route becomes profitable, so further destinations will be added said fastjet who intend "to leverage Federal Air's existing licensing infrastructure to deliver its low-cost airline model to the South African public." The new tie up now raises doubts as to fastjet's plans for a 1time airline (Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) acquisition that has been in legal limbo for some time.
