Zest Air (Manila Ninoy Aquino International) has been placed under "heightened surveillance" by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) following unspecified mechanical problems with its aircraft that have caused numerous flight cancellations over the past few weeks. In a statement, John Andrews, the CAAP deputy director general, confirmed the move adding that on August 2 alone, "six Zest Air flights were cancelled due to the aircraft situation.” In July, Zest Air cancelled a total of 33 flights. “If the findings indicate there is a shortcoming in their maintenance program, we will not hesitate to ground the airline or any other airline for that matter. We are monitoring them. This is now heightened surveillance as we call it,” Andrews said. Zest Air operates a fleet of eleven A320-200s and a single A319-100.
