Airlink (South Africa) (4Z, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) is set to launch direct flights to Skukuza airport in the Kruger National Park, with effect from March 2014 after the Skukuza Airport Management Company consortium, which includes Airlink, Federal Airlines (South Africa) (7V, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo), Lion Sands and which partners the South African National Parks authority, SANParks, was recently awarded the rights to refurbish and operate the airport. Work on the construction and rehabilitation of the airfield's sole 1'550m-long runway 17/35 and terminal building will begin on September 1, 2013, with the majority of the works to be completed within two months. Once done, the process of obtaining operational approval for the airport and its facilities in line with SACAA standards will commence. It is anticipated that this will be achieved before the start of the Q1 2014 with Airlink's first flights to commence in March 2014. Initial scheduling includes a daily service to Cape Town International, a twice daily service to Johannesburg O.R. Tambo and eventually, flights to Durban King Shaka. In 2001, the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) did not renew Skukuza Airport's operating licence after it failed to comply with aviation regulations pertaining to the operation of a commercial aerodrome.
