Air Canada (AC, Montréal Trudeau) has placed an order with Boeing (BOE, Washington National) for 109 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft inclusive of all commitments, options and purchase rights. Valued at USD6.5billion at list prices, the agreement includes firm orders for thirty-three B737 MAX 8 and twenty-eight B737 MAX 9 aircraft with substitution rights between them as well as for the B737 MAX 7 aircraft. It also provides for options for eighteen aircraft and rights to purchase an additional thirty. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2017 with two aircraft, followed by sixteen in 2018, eighteen in 2019, sixteen in 2020 and nine in 2021, subject to deferral and acceleration rights. The deal marks a significant blow for Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) whose fleet of thirty A319-100s, forty-one A320-200s and ten A321-200s the Boeings will replace. Meanwhile, the Canadian national carrier is continuing to evaluate a replacement for its E190 fleet. As part of its deal with Boeing, the US manufacturer will purchase up to twenty of Air Canada's forty-five E190s currently in service to initially be replaced with larger narrowbody leased aircraft until the airline takes delivery of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Boeing Capital Corp., the leasing arm of the Chicago-based manufacturer, will likely be used to remarket the secondhand aircraft. Air Canada will be reviewing various options over the next six months for the remaining 25 Embraer E190 aircraft including continuing to operate them or replacing them with a yet to be determined number of aircraft in the 100 to 150 seat range. Bombardier Aerospace (BBA, Montréal Trudeau) is reportedly in talks with the airline pitching its A220-100. Air Canada's plan is for its total fleet including Air Canada rouge (RV, Toronto Pearson), excluding aircraft flown by its contracted regional carriers, to grow from 192 aircraft as at September 30, 2013 to approximately 214 by the end of 2019, on a pro forma basis. Additionally, for further growth flexibility, Air Canada has 13 options and rights to purchase 10 Boeing 787 aircraft, rights to purchase 13 Boeing 777 aircraft as well as the 18 options and 30 purchase rights for Boeing MAX aircraft.
