Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingsford Smith) has come under fire from the Australian Workers’ Union after it moved to outsource the heavy maintenance of two of its fifteen B747-400s to the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (HAECO). Given Qantas' recent poor financial showing, union leaders have expressed concern that any revision to the Qantas Sale Act, widely seen as a panacea to the airline's problems, would likely jeopardize more Australian jobs. In late 2013, the national carrier announced plans to close its Melbourne Avalon Heavy MRO facility in the wake of rising costs and will now launch a tender process for the longer term maintenance of its 747s.
