Air Link (LZ, Dubbo) has refused to operate temporary flights from Sydney Kingsford Smith to Cobar and Mudgee on the grounds that regulator Transport for NSW took too long to issue it with the necessary traffic rights. The Rex - Regional Express (ZL, Wagga Wagga) subsidiary was granted interim approval from Transport for NSW to operate Regular Passenger Transport (RPT) services from Sydney to Cobar and Mudgee through March 21, 2014, but lamented Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingsford Smith) subsidiary, QantasLink, having been granted Sydney to Moree rights almost a month earlier. These cities were left without RPT air services to Sydney when Brindabella Airlines (Canberra) was placed into receivership in mid-December 2013. However, Air Link now says the seven-week operational period would not make financial sense. "Following the much delayed approval from Transport for NSW, the Rex Group has decided that it would not make any commercial sense to begin preparations for services that are authorised only until 21 March 2014. Consequently Air Link will not be operating any air services to both of these communities during the interim period," it said. Air Link says it remains in ongoing discussions with both Cobar Shire Council and Mid Western Regional Council. Rex Management will decide on whether to apply for the NSW intrastate air transport licences for the two communities of Cobar and Mudgee pending the outcome of these discussions.
