Cape Air (9K, Hyannis) has decided against operating out of Providence, Rhode Island this summer citing a shortage of suitably qualified flight crew. The airline had previously offered scheduled services to Block Island, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard between May and October.

As such, New England Airlines (NEA, Westerly) has already expressed enthusiasm at resuming flights between Providence and Block Island, a route it used to serve until a 2012 US Department of Transportation (DOT) decision turned it into a subsidized seasonal service operated by Cape Air.

Despite the suspension of this year's flights, Trish Lorino, Vice President of Communications for Cape Air, told the Block Island Times that her airline was working to resume Block Island flights in 2017.
