Chang An Airlines (Xi'an Xianyang) endured an embarrassing first day back in the air as an independent carrier after firetrucks at Zhuhai accidentally sprayed B737-800 B-5180 (msn 35089) with fire-suppressing foam instead of water during the traditional water cannon salute.
The China Aviation Daily reports the aircraft, which had just arrived from its inaugural flight from Xi'an Xianyang on Monday, May 9, was forced to undergo several safety checks after the foam was found to have blocked the engine intakes.
However, owing to the nature of the blockage, the return flight was subsequently cancelled with passengers put up in hotels.
Prior to its relaunch as an independent carrier, Chang An Airlines had operated exclusively as a capacity provider to parent Hainan Airlines (HU, Haikou).
