Conviasa (V0, Caracas Simón Bolivar) is planning to massively increase its presence at Porlamar, the airport serving the largest city on Isla de Margarita, Venezuela's key tourist destination.
Starting October 26, a new twice weekly E190 service to Panamá City Tocumen International is being offered, the first international service from Porlamar featuring in Conviasa's current network.
General Director Carlos Villegas has told El Universal that as part of a plan to increase international tourist arrivals to the island, Conviasa is also planning to add flights to either Guayaquil or Quito International as well as to Lima International by November 15, and then to Manaus International and Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini from December onwards.
Sol de Margarita also quotes Villegas as saying that up to 40% of the carrier's capacity would be reallocated to tourism-focused routes going forward. The aim is to turn Porlamar into a small hub, given it already offers Barquisimeto, Caracas, El Vigía, La Fria, Maracaibo, Puerto Ordaz/Ciudad Guayana and Santo Domingo Buenaventura Vivas as domestic destinations from the island airport.
