Air Berlin (1991) (Berlin Tegel) and TUIfly (Germany) (X3/Hanover) have agreed on a wide-ranging cooperation agreement that will see TUIfly concentrating on leisure routes only with 21 of its current B737 aircraft and operating all of its routes to city destinations on behalf of Air Berlin from November with 17 aircraft being wet-leased to Air Berlin on a long term contract. TUI Travel will take a minority stake of up to 20% in Air Berlin as part of the transaction while Air Berlin will take a similar stake in TUIfly. Another 15.3% stake in Air Berlin has been taken by ESAS Holding, controlled by the Sabanci family in Turkey, which is also the main shareholder in Pegasus Airlines (H9/Istanbul Ataturk). Air Berlin has raised additional 27.5 EUR million EUR of capital through two public capital increases within a week. Air Berlin has introduced new routes in its network: Berlin Tegel-Gothenburg Landvetter: 6x weekly B737-700 service starting on September 1 (replacing Gothenburg City route) Berlin Tegel-Krakow: 4x weekly Dash 8-400 service (already launched) (operated by LGW – Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (HE/Dortmund)) Berlin Tegel-Phuket: weekly seasonal A330-200 service starting on November 1 (operated by LTU Intl Airways (LT/Dusseldorf Intl)) Berlin Tegel-Tel Aviv Ben Gurion: 2x weekly A319-100 service starting on July 7 Dusseldorf Intl-Ponta Delgada: weekly A320-200 service has started on May 6 Münster/Osnabrück-Rome Fiumicino: 3x weekly B737-800 service has resumed on April 29 Nuremberg-Cairo: weekly seasonal A320-200 service starting on November 4 Nuremberg-Chania: weekly seasonal A320-200 service (already launched) Stuttgart-Westerland: 2x weekly seasonal A320-200/B737-700 service (already launched) Air Berlin is reportedly considering a sale of its LTU Intl Airways (LT/Dusseldorf Intl) subsidiary or a further reduction of its long-haul services. It will give up its new Nuremberg-Rijeka route on June 21.
