Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul Airport) is preparing a lawsuit against Boeing over losses it has incurred as a result of the grounding of B737 MAX aircraft, Turkish news agency Demirören has reported.
The airline itself did not comment on the matter, while the news agency did not provide any further detail as to the size of the claim involved. According to the ch-aviation Commercial Aviation Aircraft Data, the Turkish flag carrier has eleven B737-8s and one B737-9 on the ground. It also has a further 54 and nine units, respectively, on firm order from the manufacturer.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg has reported that lessor Timaero Ireland, a subsidiary of Russia's VEB-Leasing, has filed a USD185 million lawsuit against Boeing in a federal court in Chicago. The lessor has alleged fraud and breach of contract resulting from the fact that Boeing did not adequately guarantee the MAX's safety.
In 2014, Timaero ordered twenty-two B737 MAX. Four should have been delivered by now, although the lessor only took two units, according to the lawsuit. Timaero has also alleged that Boeing refused to refund advance payments despite delayed deliveries and the uncertainty as to when the MAX will resume commercial flight operations.
