Indonesia Air Transport - IAT (IDA, Jakarta Halim) is set to venture into the commercial flight operations niche after being granted the requisite Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) by the Indonesian civil aviation authority (Direktorat Jenderal Perhubungan Udara - DJPU) last month. The move mirrors that of Pelita Air (IP, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta), a state-owned charter carrier, which has spotted a gap in the Indonesian domestic market following Garuda Indonesia's withdrawal from various regions.
A subsidiary of PT Indonesia Transport & Infrastructure Tbk, IAT was established as a passenger charter carrier in 1968 and currently offers longterm and ad-hoc charter flight services to the oil and gas sector using a fleet of one ATR42-500, a Legacy 600, and various helicopters. In 2020, it secured an extension of its AOC, #121-034. Its main hub is at Jakarta Halim while secondary bases are in Balikpapan and Banyuwangi.
IAT did not disclose what its plans are insofar as commercial flights are concerned nor did its leadership respond to ch-aviation's request for additional commentary.
Privately-owned PT Indonesia Transport & Infrastructure is in the process of transforming itself into an investment company where the investment will be in its business units, each of which is involved in mining, infrastructure, and aviation. On January 20, it will hold an Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders to vote on several actions among which is its plan to transfer its assets to IAT.
