Batik Air Malaysia (OD, Kuala Lumpur International) has announced it will launch its first route to Japan, connecting Kuala Lumpur International with Tokyo Narita, thanks to the additional range of the B737-8.

The Malaysian carrier, formerly known as Malindo Air but which is a subsidiary of Lion Air Group, will launch the daily flights on December 15, 2022. It said that it is planning to grow its Japanese network with services to Sapporo Chitose and Osaka Kansai going forward, although it did not provide a specific timeline.

"These new flights will strengthen the position of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a transit hub, providing convenient and seamless connectivity between key markets such as Australia, South Asia, ASEAN, and Japan," Chief Executive Mushafiz Mustafa Bakri said.

The ch-aviation fleets module shows that Batik Air Malaysia currently operates fifteen B737-8s. The airline's fleet also comprises ten ATR72-600s and three B737-800s. It will coordinate the schedule of its sister carrier Batik Air to provide seamless connections between Japan and Indonesia.

Batik Air Malaysia has thus far focused on serving South-East and South Asia. Its services to Narita will become the first scheduled route to North-East Asia and north of Thailand.
