Ababeel Aviation (BBE, Khartoum) is reportedly planning to enter the passenger service market. Though historically a charter airline focusing on international cargo operations, Ababeel is eyeing B737-400s and ATR72-500s AeroTransport claims. Ababeel's decision to enter the passenger scene comes at a time of growing difficulty for the Sudanese domestic aviation scene. Recently, Marsland Aviation (Khartoum) CEO Rasheed Azim Ortashi lamented US sanctions against the East African country as causing untold difficulties for the Sudanese economy. The cessation and a recent standoff with South Sudan has also seen a drop in both oil and aide revenue which has forced the Central Bank to implement restrictive foreign currency policies.
