Fly Africa Zimbabwe's launch drags on amid new court case
18.09.2017 - 21:00 UTCFly Africa Zimbabwe (FZW, Harare Int'l) may be forced to further delay its full operational launch following the initiation of a lawsuit by the former majority shareholders of the carrier's predecessor, Nu-Aero (Pvt) Ltd, trading as Zimbabwe flyafrica.
It is recalled that Nu-Aero (Pvt) Ltd was a 49/51 joint-venture between flyafrica Ltd, a Mauritius-based investment vehicle, and Nu.com (Pvt) Ltd, a Zimbabwean company owned by the politically-connected Chakanyuka Karase. The partnership ended acrimoniously in October 2015 when flyafrica Ltd filed serious fraud and theft charges totalling more than USD140,000 against a Karase family member before suspending Nu.com as its local partner for breach of directorial and fiduciary duties. Karase then surrendered the airline's AOC to the Zimbabwean authorities following which it suspended all operations.
Following that move, flyafrica Ltd then exercised a default call-option in the Nu-Aero shareholder's agreement that required Nu.com to sell to flyafrica all its shares within the time frame stipulated in the clause. When Karase and Nu.com did not respond to the notice, the Mauritian firm automatically assumed ownership of...
Zimbabwe flyafrica says it bought B737NGs for 3Q17 relaunch
29.05.2017 - 03:18 UTCZimbabwe flyafrica (Z7, Harare Int'l) has acquired two B737-700s in anticipation of relaunching commercial flight operations during the next quarter, the Zimbabwean budget carrier's executive chairman Cassidy Mugwagwa has claimed.
Speaking to The Daily News, Mugwagwa said the two aircraft were currently undergoing pre-delivery maintenance checks with Lufthansa Technik in Germany ahead of their delivery to Harare Int'l.
Having resecured its Air Services Permit (ASP) from the Zimbabwean Ministry of Transport as well as an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), Mugwagwa said flights would start in August.
“We are renewing the old routes, when we start to fly we are going to be doing domestic flights in what is called the Zimbabwe Triangle, that is Harare — Victoria Falls — Bulawayo and back the same way daily for a month or so, while our technical people get back into the business of things," he said. “A month later, we will then start with the regional flights to Johannesburg O.R. Tambo and...
Zimbabwe flyafrica 2.0 to lease South African metal
06.05.2016 - 21:35 UTCZimbabwe flyafrica (Z7, Harare Int'l) will rebrand as flyafricazim (Z7, Harare Int'l) ahead of plans to now resume flights this month the chairman of Nu-Aero Pvt Ltd, Cassidy Mugwagwa, has said.
Having bought out former 49% shareholder, the Mauritius-based FlyAfrica Ltd, the LCC will replace FlyAfrica's two previous B737-500s with B737-300 equipment leased from Star Air (South Africa) (BRH, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo), he said.
As previously reported, the carrier is also considering smaller 40-50 seater aircraft for domestic Zimbabwean flights.
Zimbabwe flyafrica's AOC reinstated; to resume ops
27.12.2015 - 09:38 UTCThe Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) has reinstated Zimbabwe flyafrica's Air Operators Certificate (AOC) following a near two-month long suspension sources in the Zimbabwean aviation community have said.
Its paperwork now in order, the LCC is planning to resume commercial operations on Tuesday, December 29 though this is subject to official confirmation.
Zimbabwe flyafrica's AOC was suspended in late October following a falling out between the airline's local shareholder and then Accountable Manager Chakanyuka Karase, and its foreign Mauritius-based partner Flyafrica Ltd. The two subsequently went to court resulting in Flyafrica securing a court injunction against Karase's continued involvement in the airline. Given his exit, it is uncertain as to who the LCC's new local Zimbabwean partner is.
Prior to its suspension of operations, Zimbabwe flyafrica had operated two B737-500s on scheduled passenger flights to Victoria Falls and Bulawayo locally as well as Johannesburg O.R. Tambo, Lusaka, and Lubumbashi regionally.
It is uncertain if sister carrier Namibia flyafrica (N6, Windhoek Int'l) will resume operations given the...
