The airport of the northern Kazakh city of Kokshetau has been ordered closed to all traffic for a period of ten days following a directive from the Kazakhstan Civil Aviation Committee (KzCAC).

Central Asian Aero News reports a KzCAC audit of the airfield last year found numerous violations of local airfield safety protocols including: inadequate lighting, and communications equipment, and alarms. In addition, body- and vehicle-scanners, used to screen those accessing restricted areas, were also found to be inadequate.

The airfield was given ten days, or until May 30, to address the shortcomings or risk further punitive measures.

According to ch-aviation schedules data, SCAT Airlines (DV, Shymkent) is the only known commercial carrier to serve Kokshetau offering regular passenger flights to Aktau and Almaty International.
