The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ruled that the appointment of Musharraf Rasool Cyan as the CEO of PIA - Pakistan International Airlines (PK, Islamabad International) was illegal since he did not fulfil the job requirements, The Nation has reported.

The three-judge bench of the Court said on September 3 that Cyan's appointment as the CEO of the flag carrier violated Pakistani law. The Court also said that Sardar Mahtab Abbasi, an advisor to the then Prime Minister, intervened in the appointment and by doing so, could have violated the law.

The judges specifically pointed out that Cyan had no previous aviation experience, something that was formally required of the candidates. He was also allegedly never interviewed for the position.

As such, the judges ruled that the appointment of Cyan was null and void. As such, PIA does not currently, formally, have a CEO.

Musharraf Rasool Cyan was appointed as the CEO of the ailing flag carrier in August 2017. Already in late August, the Auditor General of Pakistan recommended sacking Cyan over irregularities in the appointment procedure and unclear remuneration rules.
