DHL Express has announced it will build a new distribution centre at Munich Franz Josef Strauss International Airport with an opening date scheduled for 2022. The logistics firm is planning to spend EUR70 million euro (USD78.9 million) on the 8,000-square-metre facility.

DHL Express will design, build, and operate the facility, although the land will be leased from the operator of the airport. It will replace the space that DHL Express currently leases at the airport's own cargo base.

The new building will have direct airside access and will facilitate DHL Express's expansion at Munich airport.

"After we modernized and expanded our service centre in Unterschleissheim last year for EUR13 million, the construction of our new gateway at the airport is the next step in our infrastructure investment plan. It shows that we are clearly committed to our presence in the Munich region," Managing Director of DHL Express Germany Markus Reckling said.
