Air India (AI, Delhi International) has expanded its aircraft acquisition plan to include between 80 and 100 additional widebody aircraft from either Airbus or Boeing, up to 70 more than previously rumoured, Reuters has reported citing sources familiar with the matter.

Earlier reports suggested the airline was looking at ordering 25-30 widebodies, in addition to 200 narrowbodies. With the latter number unchanged, Air India is now in the market for around 300 aircraft, expected to be split between the two major manufacturers.

Air India declined to comment on the matter.

Air India is continuing its fleet renewal programme launched after the acquisition by Tata Sons in 2023, when it placed firm orders for up to 470 aircraft - 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing. The airline added ten more A350 and A320neo Family jets to that order in late 2024.

As it stands, the airline has 514 aircraft yet to be delivered under existing firm orders, including ninety A320-200Ns, 210 A321-200NX, twenty-five A350-1000s, nineteen A350-900s, ninety B737-8s, fifty B737-10s, ten B777-9s, and twenty B787-9s.
