Avianca (Bogotá) allegedly regrets the creation of its Panama-based subsidiary, Regional Express Américas (Panama) (Panamá City Tocumen International), created to serve Colombia's domestic market. Latin American news reports claim that, despite pouring in USD600million for the purchase of fifteen ATR72-600s, the Colombian airline has gotten only headaches, as opposed to profits, from its newly formed subsidiary, which has yet to fly. It is claimed that the trade union at Avianca, Asociación Colombiana de Aviadores Civiles (ACDAC), has bemoaned the recruitment process of pilots at Regional Express Américas, which they say, would allow new recruits to climb the corporate ladder by circumventing union regulations regarding promotions and secondly, has made provision for the hiring of pilots who do not meet the experience-needed criterion. As a result, Avianca has decided to indefinitely defer its launch of Regional Express Américas using the ATR72s instead, to replace its ageing fleet of Fokker 50s on flights to Barrancabermeja, Florencia Gustavo Artunduaga Paredes, Manizales, Neiva, Pasto, Popayán and Tumaco and Yopal. Should it choose to proceed with the launch at a later date, analysts speculate that it would be along the lines of EasyFly (Colombia) (Bogotá) with regional flights a possibility.
