VietJetAir (VJ, Hanoi Noi Bai International) is reportedly in "advanced" talks with Somphong Sooksanguan, the president of Thai domestic commuter airline, Kan Air (Chiang Mai), to form Thai VietJetAir (VZ, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi). Mr Somphong would own 51% of the nascent carrier with the remainder owned by VietJetAir, who aim to use the airline as a vehicle for entering Thailand's lucrative market while spreading its wings regionally. Thai VietJetAir will initially operate two of its Vietnamese parent's Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) A320-200s on a domestic network with plans to go regional thereafter. It is still unknown at this time, however, whether the carrier will be based out of Bangkok Suvarnabhumi or Bangkok Don Mueang. For its part, VietJetAir, having recently launched its second international route from Hanoi Noi Bai International to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, is now working on plans to start scheduled services from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore Changi, Seoul Incheon, Tokyo Narita and Taipei Taoyuan in the near future. Kan Air, too, is in the process of expanding its fleet with added plans to build an airport on Ko Pha Ngan, an island off the country's south-east coast in the Gulf of Thailand.
