Ryanair (FR, Dublin International) has announced that as part of a USD280million investment in Greece, it will open its second and third Greek bases (64 in total) at Athens and Thessaloniki in April 2014 with a total of three based-aircraft and nine new routes to be launched. Using two B737-800s, the Irish LCC's new Athens base will see 6 new routes to Chania, London Stansted, Milan Bergamo, Paphos, Rhodes International and Thessaloniki. With its single B737-800, Thessaloniki will see three new routes to Athens, Pisa and Warsaw Modlin. Chania, the airline's first Greek base, came on line in April 2013.
