Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) will seek compensation from Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport and local energy firm Georgia Power over an electrical outage that closed the airfield for nearly 12 hours last Sunday, airline CEO Ed Bastian has told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"We will certainly be seeking the opportunity to have a conversation, and then seek reimbursement. I don’t know whose responsibility it is between the airport and Georgia Power, but we are going to have conversations with both of them," Bastian said.

According to the CEO, Delta alone might have lost between USD25-50 million due to the incident. This figure does not include additional costs associated with, among others, accommodating stranded passengers in hotels.

The power outage, caused by a fire in a Georgia Power underground electrical facility, closed the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic for nearly twelve hours, grounded some 1,500 flights, including around 1,400 of Delta's, and caused dozens more to divert to other airports.

According to the ch-aviation capacity module, Delta is the largest operator at Atlanta with 6,082 weekly departures, 77.6% of all scheduled.
