Spanair (Barcelona El Prat) has announced plans to retire its MD-87 fleet by the end of 2010 with most of the aircraft being returned to former parent SAS Scandinavian Airlines (SK/Copenhagen Kastrup) from which the aircraft are being leased. Only some of the aircraft will be replaced by additional A320 family aircraft. It is reportedly planning to add Italy back to its network later this or early next year. It has however given up its Madrid-Almeria route already and will terminate its Barcelona-Jerez de la Frontera, Bilbao-Munich, Madrid-Jerez de la Frontera and Valencia-Munich services on October 24. Spanair has rejected rumors that it was considering taking over Air Comet (A7/Madrid) from travel group Marsans.
