Ryanair (FR, Dublin International) has announced it will reopen its bases at Lanzarote and Tenerife Sur in the Canary Islands for the Summer 2023 season, three years after the COVID-19 pandemic forced their closure.

The airline said it would deploy four aircraft in total to the two airports. The development will be accompanied by network expansion comprising three new routes from Lanzarote (Cologne/Bonn, Knock, and Paris Beauvais) and the same number of added services from Tenerife Sur (Bordeaux Mérignac, Eindhoven, and Nuremberg).

Ryanair made no mention about the reopening of its third Canarian base closed in 2020 - Gran Canaria. However, speaking during the press conference, the President of the Canary Islands autonomous government, Ángel Víctor Torres, said the airline was evaluating not just Las Palmas but also Fuerteventura and Santa Cruz de La Palma. Local authorities are now trying to attract carriers to launch or restart services to La Palma following the 2021 eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, which destroyed a substantial amount of infrastructure on the island.

The ch-aviation capacities module shows that even with no base at Lanzarote and Tenerife Sur, the Irish LCC is still their largest carrier by capacity in the current winter season, with a 25.5% and 23.0% market share by scheduled departure seats, respectively. The carrier has a 16.2% market share out of the entire Canarian archipelago, trailing only local specialist Binter Canarias (NT, Gran Canaria).
