The Sint Maarten Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunication has awarded SXM Airways (SXM, St. Maarten) an Economic Permit thereby allowing the start-up to begin pursuing an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) with the island's Civil Aviation Authority.

According to The Daily Herald, the directors of SXM Airways, Elvis Queeley, Michel Carter and Jeff Oliver, were all present for the signing ceremony along with Head of the Department of Civil Aviation, Lou Halley. The permit, which is valid for three years, was almost two years in the making after an initial submission to the island's Central Bank was rejected over missing financial information.

Once certified and operational, SXM Airways plans to offer ad-hoc passenger charter flights to the surrounding Caribbean islands using a nine-seater BN-2 twin-prop.
