Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings says its Southern Air (Cincinnati International) subsidiary will commence B737-800 freighter operations for Amazon.com following the signing of an Amended and Restated Air Transportation Services Agreement with the online retail giant.
According to a stock market filing, the narrowbody freighters will be leased by Amazon from GECAS and subleased to Southern Air. Five aircraft are scheduled to be placed into service this fiscal year of which the first, N851DM (msn 32882), is currently at Jinan awaiting delivery to the United States. Amazon also has the option of placing up to fifteen additional B737-800(F)s into service with Southern Air by May 31, 2021.
The initial CMI contract will run for seven years, with Amazon holding an extension option for a total term of 10 years.
As part of the transaction, AAWW said Amazon may also take a 39.9% of AAWW’s common shares, an increase from the 30.0% previously agreed.
Of the Atlas Air stable of carriers, Atlas Air (5Y, New York JFK) currently operates twenty-one B767-300Fs for Amazon.com. For its part, Southern Air operates six B737-400(F)s and six B777Fs for DHL Express.
