Golden Myanmar Airlines (GMR, Yangon) has received permission from the Myanmar Investment Commission to engage in fuel distribution, The Myanmar Times has reported. The move will break the monopoly on jet fuel sales.

The permission covers airports at Mandalay International, Tachilek, Kawthaung, Bagan/Nyaung-u, Heho, Sittwe, and Myitkyina, as well as a jetty terminal in southern Yangon. It does not, however, include the country's main gateway in Yangon.

Yangon Aerodrome, the airport operator, confirmed that it had not received an application from the carrier to launch fuel distribution services.

Currently, National Energy Puma Aviation Services (NEPAS), a joint venture between state-owned Myanma Petroleum Products Enterprise and Singapore's Puma Energy, is the only jet fuel supplier in Myanmar. The fuel monopoly has often been listed as one of the significant obstacles to the growth of the aviation industry in Myanmar.

Privately-owned Golden Myanmar Airlines currently operates two ATR72-600s on an exclusively domestic network covering 11 airports in Myanmar.
