Continuing its aggressive post-COVID recovery and expansion strategy, Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) has announced plans to open three new bases - in Bacau in Romania, Dortmund in Germany, and St. Petersburg in Russia - during the coming months.

The Dortmund base will be the first to launch. The LCC plans to base three aircraft out of the western German airport starting on August 1, 2020. It will be Wizz Air's first German base and also the first crew base at Dortmund airport. The airline is already by far the largest operator at the airport with a 64.2% market share by capacity in September 2020, the ch-aviation capacities module shows.

Wizz Air's St. Petersburg base, which will be its first in Russia, is due to launch in September 2020. The airline will base one A320 Family aircraft out of the airport. Wizz Air is the sole European LCC serving St. Petersburg.

Finally, the carrier's two-aircraft base at Bacau will launch on October 29, 2020, as its eighth in Romania. The airline does not currently serve Bacau, where the only scheduled carrier is Blue Air (Romania) (BLA, Bucharest Henri Coanda).
