AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur International) and AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur International) have settled financial penalties that the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) imposed on them in January compelling each carrier to pay MYR2 million ringgit (USD480,000).

The parties recorded consent decrees on the matter in separate courtrooms in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur on September 14, in which the airlines both agreed to pay the fines in 18 instalments, according to court documents seen by the online news portal Malaysiakini on September 21.

AirAsia and AirAsia X will each pay the first instalment of RM113,000 (USD27,140) on October 15 and the final instalment of RM111,000 (USD26,660) on March 15, 2022.

As previously reported, Mavcom revealed in a statement on January 20 that it had imposed financial penalties on the two AirAsia Group airlines for breaching the consumer protection code, and also on MA Sepang, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), for failing to meet quality-of-service standards.

The airlines allegedly contravened the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016 (MACPC) between August 10 and September 11, 2019, by charging credit card, debit card, and online banking processing fees separate from their base fares.
